  UNDERGROUND UTILITIES: Hammond Pump Station (Howard Street)

The Hammond Sanitary District’s new pump station project on Howard Street consisted of installation of a slurry wall and excavation to a depth of 30 feet while continually controlling ground water. Once excavation was complete, concrete was placed for the intake basin floor, walls and ceiling. On top of the basin, a masonry building was constructed and trash racks and six large capacity pumps were installed inside. The entire project was self constructed by Hasse Construction.

The project presented many challenges with architectural features such as: water walls, hanging trellis, lounge fireplace, and open glass stair towers.   INSTITUTIONAL: St. Mary Medical Center - Valparaiso Health Center

A complete interior build out of a new 67,000 SF two story building with basement included wall framing, ceilings, finishes, plumbing, mechanical, electrical systems, IT systems, fire sprinkler system, fire alarm, casework, doors, frames, and hardware. Site landscaping with a large fountain, plantings, irrigation, healing garden, and lighting adds to the beauty of the project. The Valparaiso Health Center contains state-of-the-art medical infrastructure to house an Urgent Care Center, medical laboratory with blood processing, a physical therapy department, seminar rooms, doctor offices, and exam rooms. Equipment includes an MRI, CT Scan, X-Ray, EKG, Echo, Ultrasound, Mammography, and bonescan. Hasse Construction innovation came to the rescue when outside prime contractors responsible for stairs and elevator fell behind schedule. We devised an alternate method to move required materials vertically in the building by using exterior scissor lifts and hoists in mechanical shafts. Using this emergency plan, Hasse was able to successfully meet the owner’s completion deadline.

  COMMERCIAL: BMO Harris Bank, Chesterton Branch

The building was designed following the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) with the goal of Silver Certification. The building is a 4,200 SF single story incorporating a drive-up canopy with teller and ATM lanes. Exterior materials are brick, renaissance stone, and metal panel accent bands for signage. The main lobby is 23 feet tall with clerestory windows on the north and south, and full length windows on the east and west elevation. These windows are strategically located to maximize the visibility for interior functions, while considering the impact of sun angles and heat loads in work areas. There are designated parking areas for car pools and fuel efficient vehicles. We used a high solar reflectance material on the roof to reduce heat islands. We incorporated locally sourced materials.

A bioswale system absorbs and holds rainwater and eliminates the need for a lawn sprinkler system. Plantings and scrubs require minimal maintenance. We were able to divert and recycle 83 percent of waste and debris through our waste management plan. We researched and interviewed multiple waste hauling companies who had to meet and be fully aware the new construction LEED requirements Certification v2.0 credits MR 2.1 & 2.2. Implementation of this plan was critical to the success of the project’s environmental and sustainability goals.

  INDUSTRIAL: Praxair SMR 5 & 6 Hydrogen Plant Expansion

The current Praxair hydrogen plant consists of Steam Methane Reformers (SMR) 1 through 4 and produces approximately 200,000,000 CF per day. The new SMR 5 & 6 expansion tripled the volume of hydrogen produced to approximately 600,000,000 CF per day.

Located just east of the current plant in Whiting, approximately 80 percent of the construction took place within a brown field site and 20 percent of the civil construction took place within the operating Praxair hydrogen plant. Since hydrogen is such an explosive material, additional safety precautions for all phases of construction was required. Hasse self performed the civil portion consisting of the installation of 15,000 CY of concrete, with two pours in excess of 2,000 CY each. We moved 100,000 CY of dirt, installed over 17,000 LF of underground sewer and water, a lift station, a force main through the heavily congested underground and busy traffic intersection of 130th and Riley Road, erection of 10 metal buildings, and design/ build of a 10,000 SF office building.

Managing workers’ safely within the new and existing plant produced several construction technique breakthroughs. Small detail foundations to large mass pours were part of the project. Required testing of underground piping was performed while other trades were working in the same vicinity. Hasse used vacuum jet trucks for the excavation and demolition of underground obstructions so the work could be performed safely. Various techniques were used for anchor bolt setting, survey layout, etc. throughout the project in the variety of weather conditions. The detail of some foundations and anchor bolt settings required fabrication of off-site templates done in Hasse’s own yard to maintain accuracy. Excavation ofbrown field hard solidified slag to wet running sand took place. All were handled in an appropriate and safe manner.

"Hasse Construction has completed two significant projects for us within the past five years, both at our East Chicago Re-Refinery.

1. West Tank Farm

In 2009, Hasse completed the concrete foundation and containment walls for a new 2.25 acre tank farm. This project was completed through harsh winter months and in a phased approach to permit the facility to begin placing new storage tanks in service quickly. Though construction proceeded in less-than-ideal conditions, through five years of service, we have had no problems with our addition – a testament to the quality of its design and execution.

2. Engine Oil Blending Plant

Hasse’s participation in this large expansion project was as the General Contractor for a 7,200 ft. warehouse building and control room, and the General Contractor for paving 6,600 SY of roadway. Both scope elements were completed safely and within a tight schedule. We specified Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) for the paving material. The execution of RCC within our timeframe was recognized as the 2013 CAF Industrial Project of the Year, IRMCA’s 2013 Concrete Achievement Award, and ACPA’s Indiana Chapter’s 2013 Excellence in Concrete Paving award."
